How to Spot Fake Skincare Products Before You Buy
Counterfeit skincare is more common than you think and can harm your skin. Learn the warning signs and how to make sure you always buy originals.

Popular skincare products are among the most counterfeited items in the world. Fake versions can look almost identical to the real thing, yet contain unknown ingredients, bacteria or even harmful substances such as mercury and lead. At best they simply do not work. At worst they cause rashes, breakouts and lasting damage. Here is how to protect yourself.
Why fake skincare is dangerous
- Unknown ingredients: counterfeits are made without any safety testing or quality control.
- Contamination: products made in unhygienic conditions may contain bacteria or mould.
- Harmful substances: some fakes, especially whitening creams, have been found to contain mercury, steroids and heavy metals.
- No results: even harmless fakes waste your money and your time.
Warning sign 1: The price is too good to be true
Original products from reputed brands have a fairly consistent price range. If you see a well known serum at half the usual price, be very cautious. Genuine discounts exist, but extreme bargains are one of the clearest red flags.
Warning sign 2: Packaging details are off
Counterfeiters are skilled, but they rarely get every detail right. Compare the product with photos on the brand's official website and look closely at:
- Fonts and spacing on the label and box.
- Spelling mistakes or awkward grammar.
- Colours that look slightly washed out or too bright.
- Print quality, such as blurry text or misaligned logos.
- Seals and caps that feel cheap, loose or poorly fitted.
Warning sign 3: Missing or suspicious codes
Genuine products carry a batch code, and often a manufacturing or expiry date, printed or embossed on both the box and the container. The codes on the box and product should match. Many brands also include QR codes, holographic stickers or authenticity labels. If these are missing, smudged or do not match, think twice.
Warning sign 4: Texture, colour and scent
If you have used the original before, you will often notice differences straight away. A serum that should be clear might look cloudy. A cream may feel gritty, separate or smell unusual. Fragrance free products might suddenly have a strong scent. Trust your instincts and stop using anything that seems wrong.
Warning sign 5: An unreliable seller
Where you buy matters as much as what you buy. Be careful with:
- Sellers with no clear business details, address or contact number.
- Social media pages that refuse to answer questions about where products come from.
- Marketplaces with no proper return or quality guarantee.
- Listings that use stolen brand photos with no images of the actual stock.
How to shop safely
- Buy from trusted retailers that clearly state they sell original, authentic products.
- Ask about sourcing. A reputable shop will happily explain where its stock comes from.
- Check reviews from real customers, not just star ratings.
- Inspect your order on arrival, before opening, and compare it with official images.
- Keep your receipts and packaging in case you need to raise a concern.
What to do if you suspect a fake
Stop using the product immediately. If your skin is reacting, cleanse gently, apply a simple fragrance free moisturiser and see a doctor if the reaction is severe. Contact the seller, and report the listing to the platform where you bought it. You can also contact the brand directly; many take counterfeits very seriously.
