How to Find Your Skin Type: A Simple At Home Test
Knowing your skin type is the first step to choosing the right products. Learn the five skin types and a simple test you can do at home today.

Have you ever bought a moisturiser everyone raved about, only to find it left you greasy, tight or broken out? The problem is rarely the product itself. More often it simply was not designed for your skin type. Understanding your skin is the most useful skincare knowledge you can have, and it costs nothing to find out.
The five main skin types
1. Normal skin
Normal skin feels comfortable most of the day. It is neither very oily nor very dry, pores are small to medium, and breakouts are occasional. If this is you, your main goal is maintenance: gentle cleansing, hydration and daily sun protection.
2. Oily skin
Oily skin produces more sebum than it needs, especially across the forehead, nose and chin. It tends to look shiny by midday, pores are often more visible, and it can be prone to blackheads and acne. The upside is that oily skin often shows fine lines later in life.
3. Dry skin
Dry skin produces less oil and struggles to hold on to moisture. It can feel tight after washing, look dull or flaky, and fine lines may appear more noticeable. Dry skin needs richer moisturisers and gentle, non foaming cleansers.
4. Combination skin
Combination skin is the most common type. Usually the T zone (forehead, nose and chin) is oily while the cheeks are normal or dry. It needs balance: lightweight hydration overall with targeted care for each zone.
5. Sensitive skin
Sensitive skin is less a type and more a tendency that can appear alongside any of the others. It reacts easily with redness, stinging, itching or bumps, often triggered by fragrance, harsh cleansers or strong actives. Calm, minimal routines work best.
The bare face test
This simple test gives you a clear picture of how your skin behaves on its own.
- Wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat it dry gently.
- Do not apply any toner, serum, moisturiser or makeup.
- Wait for about 30 to 60 minutes and go about your normal activities indoors.
- Look at your skin in natural light and notice how it feels.
Now compare your results:
- Shiny all over: you likely have oily skin.
- Tight, rough or flaky: you likely have dry skin.
- Shiny on the T zone, comfortable or tight on the cheeks: you likely have combination skin.
- Comfortable, not shiny and not tight: you likely have normal skin.
- Red, itchy or stinging: your skin may be sensitive.
The blotting paper test
For a quicker check, press a clean blotting sheet onto different areas of your face about an hour after cleansing. Hold it up to the light. Lots of oil on every area suggests oily skin, oil only from the forehead and nose points to combination skin, and very little or no oil means normal or dry skin.
Skin type versus skin condition
It helps to understand the difference between your type and your condition. Your skin type is largely set by genetics. A skin condition is temporary and can change with weather, stress, hormones or products.
Dehydration is the classic example. Oily skin can still be dehydrated, which means it lacks water rather than oil. It may feel tight yet look shiny at the same time. Acne, dullness and redness are also conditions that can affect any skin type.
How the seasons change your skin
Your skin does not behave the same way all year. In hot, humid months it usually produces more oil, so a lighter gel moisturiser may feel better. In dry winter weather the same skin may need a richer cream. Repeat the bare face test whenever the seasons change and adjust your routine accordingly.
Choosing products for your type
- Normal: gentle gel or cream cleansers, light lotions, any comfortable sunscreen.
- Oily: foaming or gel cleansers, oil free gel moisturisers, matte or gel sunscreens, ingredients like niacinamide and salicylic acid.
- Dry: cream cleansers, moisturisers with ceramides, glycerin and shea butter, hydrating sunscreens.
- Combination: balanced gel creams and a lighter touch on the T zone.
- Sensitive: fragrance free, alcohol free formulas with soothing ingredients like centella, panthenol and oat.
